Strawberry Shortcake - a tribute to Mimi

My husband's beloved grandma "Mimi" passed away in April 2014. A craft enthusiast, she had a lot of fabric remnants, scraps and supplies that I *very* happily inherited. Given the new babies that are arriving, I thought it would be sentimental to sew up Mimi's fabric into something sweet to stay in the family. She had a lot of remnants for a strawberry shortcake pattern, along with other accent fabrics that are very girly. There wasn't a pattern,  no template, nada - i just eyeballed the scraps and sewed them together.  Double sided design - used Mimi's fabric, 3 entire spools of her thread, filling, and lace for the border.

I did take all of my remnants to a local fabric store and matched to an accent pink to really tie it all together. The pink is a little brighter than the original pieces, but it really looked nice when all tied together. See below. Now, keep in mind, if any professional seamstress were to see this, I'm sure they'd have a list of 50 "coulda/woulda/shoulda" items for this project, I am by NO means a professional,  just a woman with  a sewing machine and a goal ... to get a baby quilt out of everything in front of me.

Here we are getting started... sewing machine is ready.... That's a pic of my handsome man right up front (hee hee). Strawberry shortcake cut-outs are ironed and ready to be sewn together.

Those were her scissors, too! Cutting up and sewing together remaining fabric for the front of the quilt.

Each individual shortcake cut-out gets it's own pink border. (note: that pink is the one from the Fabric Store)

First side of blanket is DONE. Nothing complicated, just cut 'n sew. All fabric except the pink border was hers.

Next side! Used more of her accent fabric to give more variety. Again, no pattern just eyeballing what we can sew together, and where. The berry & ribbon piece came as a small remnant, but really added some nice color to this project.

Gotta have that accent border to tie them in together.

Voila, we're done & have sewn on the accent lace border. Time to sew in the blanket filling and the other side of the blanket, and we're done.

Here it is, both sides finished!

Paige, I hope you love this quilt made from your great-grandmother's fabric & sewing notions!
